A SAINT FOR OUR TIMES
Saints are pointers to the presence of God in our life often surprisingly unwanted and uncomfortable ones.
• The life and work of Saint Arnold indicate first and foremost the fundamental significance of prayer as the unceasing search for God’s will and at the same time trusting confidence in his gifts to us. He lived as Jesus asked: “Set your hearts on his kingdom first, and on God’s saving justice, and all these other things will be given you as well” (Mt 6:33).
• His intensive “searching for God” broadened his vision for the “signs of the (his) times,” making him so alert that he was able to judge opportunities with lightning speed when they arose, but also to wait patiently for the right moment to come to a decision.
• Saint Arnold’s unpretentious appearance and somewhat awkward personality show once again that God loves to call unpretentious, apparently weak and insignificant persons to collaborate in his kingdom and to bring about great things.
• As a prayerful person he became a traveling apostle, and as founder of religious congregations a man of the universal Church. “The pilgrim Church is missionary by her very nature, since it is from the mission of the Son and the mission of the Holy Spirit that she draws her origin, in accordance with the decree of God the Father,” as Vatican II was to state years after Arnold’s death (AG 2). With his intensive relationship to the triune God, Saint Arnold helped prepare the way for this understanding of the Church.
In many ways, Arnold Janssen was a man ahead of his times. In the preparation of missionaries Arnold Janssen placed great value on the study of the peoples and cultures to whom they were sent. Some SVDs won world recognition in the areas of ethnology and anthropology. From 1906 on, Fr. Wilhelm Schmidt began publishing Anthropos, which is still an important anthropological journal. Respectful openness to the values of other cultures and peoples was part of the Congregations’ self understanding from the beginning.

The Second Vatican Council states: In the lives of the saints “God vividly manifests his presence and his face. He speaks to us in them, and gives us a sign of his kingdom, to which we are strongly drawn, having so great a cloud of witnesses over us and such a witness to the truth of the gospel. Nor is it by the title only of example that we cherish the memory of those in heaven, but still more in order that the union of the whole Church may be strengthened in the Spirit by the practice of fraternal charity (cf. Eph 4:1-6). For just as Christian communion among wayfarers brings us closer to Christ, so our companionship with the saints joins us to Christ, from whom as from its fountain and head, issues every grace and the very life of the people of God.”
The purpose of canonization is to highlight God’s presence in our lives, our communion with Jesus Christ, and the unity of the entire Church in God’s Spirit as a sign of his kingdom in this world.
Without this qualification the saints we look up to would all too easily be seen as “faultless super beings,” with “magical powers of assistance” attributed to their intercession in every possible situation. As real people, however, the saints’ first “task” is to be a living sign of the liberating and healing presence of God in our own daily life as the people and family of God. Through their being and doing, their strengths and weaknesses, they show us the way.
God speaks to us in the lives of the saints in very diverse and often unexpected ways. It was so with Saint Arnold, through his unspectacular life God wrought the extraordinary.
hat, we may ask, distinguishes this rather plain and at times awkward character, Arnold Janssen, as a saint? The surprising but pertinent answer of Cardinal Rossi, official postulator for Arnold Janssen’s beatification in 1975, was: “He did ordinary things in an extraordinary manner.”
In that way the not particularly charismatic high school teacher, Arnold Janssen, became the founder of a religious family that today numbers 10,000 women and men from every continent and many cultures.
In the life and work of Saint Arnold, God reveals himself as the God of life for all, as God who is “Good News” for all people. To live that message and pass it on in word and deed was Saint Arnold’s passionate desire and enduring legacy.

The hand of the Lord planted and cared for this vineyard; sunlight, rain and growth were given to it by the Lord. I cannot credit myself with anything in it except my poor collaboration, and even that was not my own merit. The idea did not come from me, nor did the perseverance to hold on to it amidst great difficulties, the powerful help in carrying it out and the support amidst general mistrust. It was not me but the Lord who awoke the vocations and enabled the individuals to remain faithful to their resolution. And if it had not been for the Lord, who would have sent the necessary financial support, and that amidst needs that grew greater from day to day! Truly, it must be the firm conviction of each one of us: the foundation, preservation and further development of our Society has no other author than He who dwells in heaven and directs and guides all things on earth.”

Arnold Janssen and his Times
“We live in a time when everything seems to be shaking and sinking. Now you are coming and want to start something new!” was the response of Archbishop Melchers of Cologne in 1875 when Arnold Janssen asked him to support the foundation of a German mission house. He thought there were enough pagans in Cologne; “they should be converted first.”
The second half of the 19th century was a turbulent time: the peak of European nationalism, colonialism and imperialism. It was a time of magnificent cultural achievements, of the industrial revolution’s boundless belief in progress spurred on by inventions, discoveries and innovations in technology, production, medicine, agriculture, transportation and communications media. It was a time of upheavals in society caused by the workers’ movements. The European powers were busy dividing up almost the entire world among themselves. It was the time of Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche and Charles Darwin.
Beginning in 871, the Catholic Church in Germany was caught up in the “kulturkampf” of Bismark’s new German Empire. New exclusion laws constantly and drastically curtailed the activities of priests, religious orders and Catholic associations.
At the same time it was an era of growing missionary enthusiasm all over Europe. A good number of mission congregations and undertakings date from that time. Geographically speaking, the European Church became the universal Church. In this situation of dramatic upheaval, Arnold Janssen recognized the signs of the times. Searching for God’s will, he gave a concrete and apt response through his life’s work.
Who was this man
Arnold Janssen?
EARLY YEARS
The second of eleven children, Arnold was born on November 5, 1837 in Goch, a small town in the German Lower Rhineland, near the Dutch border. His parents were Gerhard and Anna Katharina Janssen. He himself described his home life: “Apart from some very limited property of his own, my father’s land was mostly leased. He cultivated this with the aid of two horses. Beside the farm he had a freight hauling business and generally went to Nijmegen every week. When father was expected home, mother sent us out to meet him.” In this large family, Arnold Janssen learned early on to help with the work and to be undemanding and industrious.
A deeply prayerful faith and fidelity to the Catholic Church characterized and sustained the life of the Janssen family. This was especially evident in their devotion to the Blessed Trinity and veneration of the Holy Spirit. On his deathbed in 1870, Gerhard Janssen recommended this family spirituality to his children as his legacy: “Never miss High Mass on Sundays in honor of the Blessed Trinity to thank the Triune God for all the graces of the week, and attend Mass in honor of the Holy Spirit each Monday to implore the blessings of the Holy Spirit for the week.” Of his mother Arnold stated quite simply: “She had a great love of prayer.”
When Arnold was ten, the parish curate Heinrich Ruiter managed to persuade Arnold’s parents to send him to high school, first in Goch itself and then to the diocesan minor seminary Gaesdonck. Mathematics and natural sciences were his favorite subjects. In July 1855, not yet eighteen, he gained his school leaving certificate [Abitur] in Muenster.
After gaining his school certificate Arnold went to Muenster to study theology. Already at the end of the second semester, however, he wrote: “Now that the time has come to make a decision – whether I will start theology now or later – I have firmly made up my mind to study mathematics and the natural sciences in order to get a degree in these subjects and then go on to theology.”
That set a clear goal to the path he had begun when he started at the diocesan high school. He wished to become a priest and high school teacher. The bishop was also in agreement with this. Consequently he began studies in Muenster in the fall of 1855, then continued in Bonn, studying mathematics, natural sciences and philosophy with his accustomed thoroughness and determination. In 1859 he was already qualified to teach these subjects at high school level. He transferred back to the major seminary in Muenster and began theology studies. Here if not sooner, a different Arnold Janssen, now 33 years old, came to the fore. The man known in the school in Bocholt as “a man of prayer but not very sociable or approachable,” the man who spoke only in the classroom and occasionally in a less important church, had become a man of the public arena who knew how to put his message across both personally and through the media. If in former times he had not found it easy to reach out to others, now he had not the slightest difficulty in knocking at the door of any parish house in order to speak about and win people for the Apostleship of Prayer. He had no inhibitions about approaching bishops and dignitaries with his message. His extensive travels and the great diversity of his contacts and encounters broadened his vision and thinking far beyond the narrow horizons of Bocholt.
Arnold Janssen’s situation in those years appears rather complicated: on the one hand he was imprisoned by the frustrating, prejudices about him as a not particularly successful nor recognized mathematics teacher and on the other hand, he felt challenged and highly motivated and confirmed in his life and service in the Apostleship of Prayer. On the one side, there was the security of his teaching position that apparently did not fulfill him, on the other side an insecure existence in the service of a task that he began to see more and more as his own.
A decision was finally provoked in 1873 through a conflict with the school board in Bocholt. It concerned a statue of the Madonna that Arnold Janssen himself had acquired as early as 1868 and wanted to set up in the school hall. It was a Catholic school but there were also Protestant and Jewish pupils. There were arguments this way and that between the school board and Janssen regarding the statue. In this connection, he requested the bishop of Muenster in 1870 to free him from the school so that he could devote himself to purely religious activities. At that time, the bishop refused. But not so in 1873. By that time the Kulturkampf was well and truly under way. In the new German Empire under Prussian leadership, the activities of the Catholic Church in schools was drastically limited at the end of 1871. There was definitely no place for a statue of the Madonna. Arnold Janssen stuck to his guns – and handed in his notice in March 1873.
Arnold Janssen fulfilled his school obligations until the end of the academic year 1872/73. Then the 36-year old was free to begin a new phase of his life. In October 1873 he took a position as house chaplain for the Ursuline Sisters in Kempen who ran a boarding school. That gave him the necessary free time to do even more for the Apostleship of Prayer. In July 1873 he described his situation as follows: “I would have been prepared to make even greater efforts for that [the Apostleship], even to commit myself totally to this holy task, and to place all my strengths and abilities, even my life, at its disposal if only it could have moved the thrice holy and good God to pour out the Spirit of grace and prayer more richly on the world.” But he wanted to put into practice an idea that had already developed in Bocholt, “to publish a popular monthly periodical for the promotion of prayer and participation in the great intentions of the Divine Savior, especially the propagation of the faith.” With his customary thoroughness he set to work. His publishing experience stood him in good stead, as did his extensive contacts and relationships won through his activities for the Apostleship of Prayer. Already in January 1874 the first issue of his periodical, the Little Messenger of the Sacred Heart, was published. The title was taken from the Apostleship bulletin with the addition of the word “Little.” In the beginning Arnold Janssen had to pay for its publication from his savings. He described the goal of the magazine as: “The principal, if not the sole, goal of the undertaking is to inform people about the Catholic missions at home and abroad in a readable and interesting manner.” However, it quickly became apparent in the following issues that it was to be a magazine that mainly dealt with the “missions abroad.” In those days the term used was “pagan missions.” On the title page of the June issue there appeared for the first time Arnold Janssen’s emblematic prayer: “May the divine Heart of Jesus live in our hearts.”
A Momentous Encounter –
Janssen and the Universal Mission
n May 1874 a newspaper article caught Arnold Janssen’s attention. The Prefect Apostolic of Hong Kong, Bishop Giovanni T. Raimondi, was visiting Dr. von Essen, the parish priest of Neuwerk. “I visited him to get more detailed information about the missions and other things. I wanted to awaken and promote interest in the missions through the Little Messenger of the Sacred Heart. I told him of my regret that Germany, where Catholic life was so vigorous, did not have a single mission house for the training of missionaries. On the other hand, France, Italy, Belgium and even Britain, where Catholic life was so weak, did have such institutions. I myself could not go to the missions because I was too old. ‘But that is not necessary,’ replied Mgr. Raimondi, ‘some priests must stay at home to work for the cause in Germany.’ I thought then only of placing myself at the disposal of whoever would begin such an enterprise and of dedicating my energy to it. I visited Mgr. Raimondi again and we spoke about the same question. Finally, Mgr. Raimondi said that if no other German priest whom I could join was willing to undertake the project, then, trusting in the help of God, I should begin myself and team up with Dr. von Essen for that purpose. The notion of beginning such a project myself had never dawned on me. As a result I thought it was asking too much; I did not consider myself capable of it. Later Mgr. Raimondi visited me in Kempen and urged me even more pressingly to take up the task. I hesitated just as before. Nevertheless, I wanted to present the plan to the public through the Little Messenger of the Sacred Heart and try to arouse interest in it.”
THE GERMAN MISSION HOUSE
BECOMES A REALITY
The idea would not leave Arnold Janssen’s mind. In the following issue of his Little Messenger of the Sacred Heart he came back to it time and again. As it happened, the collaboration with Dr. von Essen encouraged by Bishop Raimondi proved extremely difficult. One year earlier von Essen had already received permission from the Pope to found a German mission house. But the “chemistry” between von Essen and Janssen simply did not work. So Janssen took up the task alone. In the November issue of the Little Messenger of the Sacred Heart he appealed to his readers: “The establishment of a German house of studies for foreign missions proves more and more to be an indispensable necessity. At the moment many priests are being driven, so to speak, into distant lands. Therefore the establishment of a mission seminary in a safe, well-situated locality is now indispensable. There is no lack of advice from men who are well-informed by experience. This holy task would be relatively easy to carry out if only it is tackled courageously. The first and greatest difficulty is the matter of money. There is an offer of a well-located house with a garden. But how to buy it and set it up? The holier a work is, the more difficulties it usually meets. It will be like that in this case also. It is true that to be pious means to pray piously, but also to work piously with the talents received and to sacrifice piously insofar as conditions allow it.”
THE WAYFARER
During the following months, along with his work as editor of the Little Messenger of the Sacred Heart and his duties as chaplain for the Ursuline Sisters in Kempen, Arnold Janssen was either traveling tirelessly or working day and night on his correspondence. As was his nature, he attacked the work valiantly – with all his available means, abilities and connections. At the same time he went looking for a suitable house, financial means and collaborators, while thinking about the organization of that mission house and the training of the future missionaries. He obtained in succession (on long trips), the permission and recommendation of the Dutch, German and Austrian bishops and consulted other mission houses and congregations at home and abroad (Benedictines in Beuron, Picpus Missionaries, Scheutveld Mission Congregation, Mill Hill in London).
OPPOSITION AND RESERVATIONS
Few shared Arnold Janssen’s enthusiasm, however. It was a good idea but no one could see how Janssen, of all people, would successfully bring it about. How people thought and spoke about the plan and the planner becomes clear from a sarcastic remark the curate in Kempen, Fr. Fugmann, is supposed to have made to Arnold Janssen: “Yes, do that, you are called to it: Firstly you have the necessary obstinacy; secondly the necessary piety; thirdly you are sufficiently impractical.” Bishop Paredis of Roermond, in whose diocese Steyl was located, is reported to have remarked about Janssen’s request: “Father Janssen, chaplain to the Ursulines in Kempen has just been to see me. He wants to found a mission house. Just think of it – and he has nothing. He is either a saint or a madman.” The reaction of Archbishop Melchers of Cologne is also telling. When Arnold Janssen “presented his plan to establish a house for the foreign missions, the bishop first looked at him seriously and said, ‘We live in a time when everything seems to be shaking and sinking. Now you are coming and want to start something new?’ Fr Janssen replied, ‘We live in a time when much is collapsing, and new things must be established in their place.’”

is the great goal of our life.”
The evening after the first visit, the bishop is supposed to have told others, “Fr. Janssen was here today and wants to start a house for missionaries. He wants to convert pagans. Here in Cologne there are enough pagans. They should be converted first.” Arnold Janssen himself described his inner feelings during those months poignantly in a letter: “I, too, had a time of harsh struggles when it seemed to me that I would have to let myself be crucified. Added to that came physical ailments and a number of adversities. Yet it seemed to me that to give up would be to go against God’s holy will. That is why I kept going, went on working towards it. I do not doubt that God wants this work and that he is the true agent who is making use of our weak abilities for this purpose.”
ACQUISITION OF THE HOUSE IN STEYL
CONSECRATION TO THE SACRED HEART
With such a determined attitude the business progressed. Thanks to several large donations, it was possible to purchase a former, rather derelict inn and its grounds in Steyl in the Netherlands. Due to the Kulturkampf, any thought of a foundation in Germany at that time was out of the question. Arnold Janssen signed the purchase contract on June 16, 1875 – a symbolic date of great significance for him. On that day, the 200th anniversary of the appearance of the Sacred Heart to Margaret Mary Alacoque was solemnly celebrated throughout the Catholic world. A number of bishops and many Catholics consecrated themselves and their churches to the Sacred Heart. Arnold Janssen recounted, “It was decided to make this day the foundation day of the proposed missionary society. We resolved that each one of us, wherever he happened to be at the time, would consecrate himself to the Sacred Heart of Jesus for the goals of the mission house. We all did this. And on the afternoon of that day, I went to Steyl near Venlo to definitively conclude the purchase of the property for the mission house.”
At the time the community consisted of Arnold Janssen himself and three solitary individuals with an interest in the mission house: Pastor Peter Bill in Luxembourg, John Baptist Anzer, a seminarian in Regensburg, and Franz Xavier Reichart, a seminarian from Voralberg who was studying in Louvain, but who on the advice of his confessor did not make the consecration.
In spite of that, in the August 1875 issue of his Little Messenger of the Sacred Heart, Arnold Janssen described the memorable day for his readers: “The mission house will never forget its origin and it has as its stated goal to fulfill the grace-giving intentions of the divine Heart of Jesus. Still more does it feel compelled by its origins to call upon the Sacred Heart of Jesus more forcefully and, as a proof of this, to make the following beautiful words its motto: Vivat Cor Jesu in cordibus hominum! May the Heart of Jesus live in the hearts of all people! So be it. Amen.”
After laying this spiritual foundation, he began to develop an inner structure for the mission house. At the beginning of February 1875, only a few months after his decision to take on the task himself and even before others had shown any interest in joining, he wrote about his plan to the Propaganda Fide in Rome. In that letter it already became clear that his ideas far exceeded the customary vision of a “German mission house”: “I believe we cannot manage without the foundation of a religious congregation,” and further: “I wished, therefore, that if possible the center of this project would always be in Rome.” Still with nothing concrete in hand, he by-passed the contemporary ideas about a “national” mission institute. Clearly he had the vision of an “international” religious congregation with firm bonds, extending beyond the German-speaking areas.
In July 1875 Heinrich Erlemann moved to Steyl as the first occupant of the dilapidated inn. A trained carpenter, this first “mission candidate” of Arnold Janssen spent his first weeks repairing and furnishing the house. He was soon joined by Franz X. Reichart. On August 5,1875 Arnold Janssen, Fr. Bill and Franz Reichart gathered for the first time as the initial community in Steyl. They dealt with three points: the future statutes of the house, a draft letter to the bishops whose approbation had not yet been solicited, and the election of a provisional rector. The inaugural day was set for September 8, 1875.
On August 27 Arnold Janssen left the Ursuline Convent in Kempen and moved to Steyl. With him came his brother Juniper whose Capuchin monastery had been dissolved. In the ensuing years he was to prove a great help to Arnold.

n his sermon during the inaugural liturgy on September 8, 1875 Arnold Janssen declared: “Whether anything will come of it is known only to God. But we express our thanks to the Giver of all good things for having helped with this beginning. We hope that the house will attain its purpose. The simplicity of this beginning should not discourage us. The mightiest tree starts as a single seed and the strongest of giants was once a weak, whimpering baby. We know that with our present resources we cannot accomplish our task, but we hope the good God will provide everything we need. And he may do with us what he wills. If the seminary succeeds, we will thank the grace of God. If nothing comes of it, we will humbly strike our breast and confess that we were not worthy of the grace. Certainly it would be a pity if our efforts were in vain. Who knows whether anyone would try a second time. So I appeal to all those assembled here: What can we do? First, pray. Ask the Lord of the harvest. Secondly, sacrifice.”
Years later Fr. Erlemann described the scene at the inauguration: “On the faces of the priests present, not only those from Holland, but especially those from Germany, doubt and misgiving showed clearly, as if they were saying: ‘What will become of this dream child?’ It struck me very much, because after the liturgical celebration, they all disappeared silently, without a word, almost without saying farewell to the few inhabitants of the dilapidated Ronck Villa. During the entire ceremony there was a very subdued mood which often found expression in all kinds of questions put to Rector Janssen and the few other members of the house. And who could blame them for their doubts about such a beginning. What was there to see at that time? A thin, weak priest as superior, an apprentice carpenter in blue overalls [Erlemann himself] and an exiled Capuchin Brother [Br. Juniper] and a few other workers hired to arrange the festivities, an old tumbledown house with miscellaneous furniture borrowed for the occasion and the banquet table with miscellaneous china, and a dug-up potato field that had provided the potatoes for the festive meal, and otherwise virtually nothing. That was meant to be a ‘German-Dutch Mission House’ whose solemn inauguration was reported in the newspapers.”
And Arnold Janssen himself said later, looking back on the first months in Steyl: “Almost everywhere people were saying nothing would come of this initiative, it was even impossible that anything could come of it. Personally I soon noticed that wherever I went, I was looked at with great pity, like a person suffering from eccentric ideas.”
CRISIS AND A NEW START
Public opinion was not the only depressing part of the new Mission House. During the first months of 1876, alongside the material poverty and the absence of new collaborators, life in the House was overshadowed by dramatic clashes within the small community. They concerned the general goal of the Mission House, but especially Arnold Janssen’s strict ascetical ideas about the way of life in the House and his position as superior. In the end they led to the departure from Steyl of Fr. Bill and the theology student Reichart at the end of April 1876, leaving Arnold Janssen and John Baptist Anzer to make a new start in May when they were able to agree on the goal and statutes: “The purpose of our society is the spreading of the word of God on earth, especially by evangelizing activity among those non-Catholic peoples where this activity would prove most fruitful. In the first place we mean the pagan peoples, especially those in the Far East.” And: “The name of our house is ‘St. Michael’s Mission House in Steyl’. However, the society itself is called … ‘Society of the Divine Word at the Service of the King and Queen of Angels’ … or briefly, ‘Society of the Divine Word’, ‘Societas divini Verbi’.”

They were able to reach a compromise regarding regulations for the house and for their life as a religious community, as well as inclusion of academic sciences in the training of future missionaries. On June 16, 1876, one year after their personal consecration to the Sacred Heart, Janssen and Anzer made a kind of perpetual profession on the basis of these statutes. The statutes were to remain valid until the First General Chapter of the Society, 1884-1886, at which the first Constitutions were worked out and ultimately attained papal approbation. The central idea for the new mission house was described by Arnold Janssen in the May issue of the Sacred Heart Messenger: “Some might say that for the Society a rapid increase in personnel and external expansion is desirable. That is definitely not our opinion. Our opinion is that above all else our house must grow in interior spirit and virtue. A missionary in a pagan country can achieve something worthwhile only when he is enlightened, pious and holy. Consequently our house must be built on the striving for perfection. This is the foundation that must be laid first of all. May the Mother of Holiness help us and send us people who come here mainly to work for their own sanctification.”

It was a fresh start that was aided by the arrival of high school students, theology students and newly ordained priests, including John Janssen, Arnold’s younger brother, whose studies he had paid for. John Baptist Anzer was ordained to the priesthood on August 15. In January they were already able to start a small printing press of their own in Steyl and in August work began on a sizeable new building. In spite of all the confusion and struggles of the beginning, the growing community in Steyl was fairly stable by the time it celebrated its first anniversary on September 8. Immediately afterwards Arnold Janssen attended the Catholic Congress in Munich, at which the new Mission House was most warmly recommended to “the interest and support of Catholics.” In Munich he also met the student John Baptist Jordan who briefly showed an interest in Arnold Janssen’s foundation but later founded the Salvatorians.
The small seed began to germinate. A year later, the then Vicar Apostolic of Central Africa, Daniele Comboni, founder of the Comboni Missionaries, visited Steyl. (Also canonized with Arnold Janssen and Joseph Freinademetz on October 5, 2003.) Six months later Bishop Paredis of Roermond, in whose diocese Steyl lay, also came to visit.
In August 1878 Joseph Freinademetz, a diocesan priest from South Tyrol, entered Steyl. With John Baptist Anzer he was sent out a year later, on March 2, 1879, as Steyl’s first missionaries to China. They went first to Bishop Raimondi in Hong Kong. Probably with great relief but also with pride Arnold Janssen could say in his homily: “So now, in accordance with its purpose, the Mission House is sending out its first missionaries. Let us hope that many others will follow them! … Divine Providence has brought it about that he (Bishop Raimondi) who played such a great role in the founding of the House is now receiving its first missionaries.”

The
people who attend charismatic retreats will surely have a better appreciation
for the presence of the Holy Spirit in their lives .
The
Spirit is the Spirit of Power. (1 Cor2:4) the source of Christian love, hope
and faith.
Sprit
frees men/women from the law (Gal5:18, Rom 8:2) it frees us from the cravings
of flesh (Gal5:16)
The
spirit is indeed the gift that constitutes the work of Jesus (Gal4:6)
The
spirit assists us in prayer and makes us especially aware of his relation to
the God the Father.
This
power of the Spirit is not something distinct from the power of Christ.
We
have been consecrated and have become upright “by the Power of our Lord Jesus
Christ and through the spirit of our God. (1 Cor6:11)
His
Holiness Pope John 23rd was the one who let the winds of the Spirit
permeate the minds and hearts of Catholic people.
Vatican
II was the place where one could see the presence of the Holy Spirit working
actively in the council fathers.
This
was the sign of the presence of the Holy Spirit in the recent modern times.
We
can also say the Spirit entered our lives during our Baptism and then during
our Confirmation.
Let
us become aware and live this reality.
The
presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives gives us an added courage to live our
Christian commitment with renewed zeal.
When
the Believer receive the power of the Holy Spirit.
The
life of a Christian becomes a crucible of joy which is visible in all
vicissitudes of life.
The
seven gifts which each one of us receives when we surrender to the yoke of the
Spirit humbly.
We begin
to live under His influence our lives become attuned to the times through His
grace and inspiration.
We
began the novena to the Holy Spirit nine days ago.
When
we celebrate the feast of Pentecost the presence of the Holy Spirit will be
helping us to participate in the Eucharistic celebration with participative
joy.
When
we read the testimonies of people who have been touched by the power of the
Holy Spirit we feel united with the spirit of such people.
It
also gives an added solidarity to live our belief much more relevantly and
courageously and sensitively to the realities of life.
We
have seen this in the recent attacks on Christians in many areas of our country.
Though
the attacks continue and even today we experience the persecutions due to this
people have to flee their homes and abandon their possessions.
Even
then people never lose hope and faith in the saving God.
This
spirit has given many much joy even in suffering.
This
has also united the Christians in a more real way than many years before in our
country.
Though
we are a small minority in India ,
with the power of the Holy Spirit we have been able to record our presence, in
various fields more explicitly than many years earlier.
We
can be glad we possess the Spirit of the risen Savior.
he
has helped his work to continue for centuries.
We
share Christ’s role as priest, prophet and king.
When
we participate along with the priest in the Eucharist we live the gift of
priesthood in offering Jesus offering to His Father.
When
we preach through our activities witnessing to the truth we have experienced we
profess his ideals prophetically as prophets, because when we do this we require
the courage of a prophet.
When
a prophet has sufficient courage can his/her message become a means of wise
message for conversion, union and harmony.
The
believing community when they live these ideals in a community which becomes a
missionary endeavor the activity becomes a dynamic kingly value for a kingdom
which does not show any external power but the power of service and love this
really becomes a value of a new kingdom where each member becomes a king.
We
build such communities where the universal value of unity and
brother/sisterhood becomes vibrantly visible and truly worth proclaiming to the
world.
When
the fruits or gifts of the Spirit which are love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility and self control are visible in the
lives of the Christians their life becomes a living witness, sharing every
thing they have.
The
life of the Spirit is also a challenge to all the persons who are gifted by
Him.
His
invitation to be his messenger is seen in people like Peter who was timid and
who abandoned Jesus in his suffering, when the Spirit empowered him he was bold
enough to speak in tongues and the people who listened to him thought he was
drunk.
When
our actions become visible in the presence of the Spirit, life becomes worth
living and we are able to become missionaries in whatever job we may be engaged
in.
Our
life becomes a temple where the of the Spirit of the Lord.
We
have heard the readings and the first reading today told us how Jesus sent the
Holy Spirit on the apostles and Mary and that day became a day of burning fire
for all those timid people who were hiding from the wrath of the Jews,
Pharisees and Sadducees to be boldly witness to the truth of Risen Savior.
We
have experienced this reality, in our lives too, when we felt, we are at the
end of our rope and we did not know what to do and how to deal with a certain
situation.
What
happened when we surrendered and the let the power of the Spirit to over power
us we found a certain calm and power descend upon us and empower our
helplessness with his courage and wisdom.
In
the second reading we see how our different organs are working harmoniously
because of one purpose that is to give orientation to our life.
When
all our parts work harmoniously we are able to achieve all that is required of
us in this society where we live. There are various functions we have to
perform and we can do this because we are working because of the Spirit that is
unifying us so systematically.
The
functions of the members of a society as human beings are something very
special.
We
can be part of a society because we have different types of gifts given to us
as we may be sometimes leading, sometimes organizing and some times unifying.
In
the Gospel of today Jesus is so concerned about his disciples, he not only
gives each of his members the peace, joy and stability but also the power to
forgive sins.
Forgiveness
is a gift given to the church and the priest holds this key to forgive through
the sacrament of reconciliation how often we get ourselves signed by this
sacrament which gives us added lost Spirit.
That
is why this sacrament is sacrament of renewal and reconciliation.
Therefore
the Spirit of the Lord is constantly guiding us to be honestly following the
path he has set for each one of us.
Let
us receive this Holy Spirit to be witnesses of the Lord to the whole world.
Wish
all of you all the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.

विशय: पवित्रात्मा का महत्व/
प्रेरित चरित में से पाठ 2:1-11 शिश्यों पर पवित्रात्मा का प्रेषण/
कुरिंथियों के नाम पॊलुस का पहला पत्र 12:3-7, 12-13 पवित्रात्मा के वरदान/

आज कल लोग उपवास ऒर मनन चिंतन करने कारिसमाटिक रेट्रीट केंद्रों में जाते हॆं/
उधर लोगों को पवित्रात्मा की पहचान कराई जाती लोग गवाही दिया करते/
आत्मा विश्वासियों को बल देता हॆ/ (1 कुरिंथ 2:4)
पवित्रात्मा की प्रेरणा से विश्वासियों को विश्वास, भरोसा ऒर प्रेम का वरदान प्राप्त होता हॆ/
ईश्वर का आत्मा हमें नियम के कायदे कानून का अर्थ समझा कर उसके चंगुल से मुक्त करता हॆ/(गलेसियों के नाम l5:18,रोमियों के नाम 8:2)
पवित्रात्मा मनुष्य को शारिरिक कामवासना के आकर्षणॊं से मुक्त करने की राह बताता हॆ/(गतियों के नाम पत्र 5:16)
पवित्र आत्मा के दान ईसा के कार्यों को आगे ले जाते हॆं/ (गलातियों के नाम पत्र 4:6)
पवित्रात्मा विश्वासियों को प्रार्थना करने सिखाता ऒर ईशपिता के संबध को स्थिर कर्अने मे सहायक होता हॆ/
ईस प्रकार के दान ईश्वर के दान से अलग न होकर एक दूसरे के पूरक हॆं/
ईश्वर ने मनुष्य को पवित्र बनने का गुण दिया हॆ/"ईसा के प्रभाव से बप्तिस्मा का संस्कार हमें मिला जिससे हम पापमुक्त बन कर ईश्वर की आत्मा से संपन्न किये गये हॆं/" (1कुरिथियों के नाम पत्र 6:11)
संत पापा योहन तेविस्वें ने पवित्रात्मा के प्रेरणा से कलीसिया में एक ऎसा वरदान लाया ऒर कलिसिया को नवीन उत्साह से भरने कि अवसर दिया/
दूसरी वातिकन महा सभा में पवित्राम्त्मा का प्रभाव भरपूर दिखाई देता हॆ/
इस महान सभा के समय पवित्रात्मा का प्रेरणा का असर उनके हर विचारों कार्यों में द्रष्टिगोचर होता हॆ/
आधुनिक युग पवित्रात्मा का युग कहलाता हॆ, लोगों के जीवन में लोग जब उनको उनके जॊवन में आने का अवसर देतें हॆं तो इसका असर हुए बिना न रहता/
हर विश्वासी का जीवन बप्तिस्मा के दिन पवित्रात्मा के दान से सम्रद्द हुआ, पवित्राम्ता से द्र्ढीकरण संस्कार से संपन्न हुआ हॆ इसको उसे याद रखना चाहिए/
इस सत्य का जब तक हमें एहसान न हो तब तक हमारा विश्वासी जीवन अधूरा ही रहेगा/
पवित्रात्मा सभी विश्वासियों को एक सुनियोजित रीती का बल देकर द्रढ करता हॆ/
हम विश्वासी अपने विश्वास के दान को लोगों के सम्मुख विश्वास ऒर दॆर्य के साथ अपने जीवन में लागू करना चाहिए/
पवित्रात्मा का बल प्राप्त विश्वासी ईश्वरीय आनंद का सह्भागी होता हॆ/
आनंद की लॊव को वह लोगों के सम्मुख रखने डरता नहीं/
विश्वासी पर अडचनें, प्रतिबंध, तकलीफें जब आतीं हॆं तो ईश्वर उसे अकेला नही छोडता उसे अपना बल देकर साहस के साथ उस का सामना करने का समय देता हॆ/
ईश्वर की इच्छा को पूरा करने के लिए पवित्रात्मा का दान सहयोग करता हॆ/
हमारे कार्य की पहचान तब दिखाई पडती हॆ जब हम पवित्रात्मा के प्रेरण से अपना कार्य संपन्न करते हॆं/
ऎसे हर विश्वासी को पवित्रात्मा का वरदान प्रेरणा देता रहता किस कर्य कॆसे करे/
पेंतेकोस्त के त्योहार पहले सभी विश्वासी नॊव दिवसीय नोवीना कर उसके आगमन की तॆयारी करते हॆं/
आज इस प्रार्थना का फल हम सब विश्वासि अनुभव कर सकते/
पूजा बलिदान में सह्भागिता कर्ते समय ईसा के बलिदान के भागी हम बन कर हमारे जीवन को सफल बनाने का अवसर लेते हॆं/
हमारे जीवन की अनेक अचरज की बातें हम याद कर उस की घॊषना हमारे जीवन की गवाही से दे सकते/
इस प्रकार विश्वासी एक दूसरे के सुख दुख मे सहभागी बन कर उस का अनुभव कर सकते हॆं/
कुछ दिनों पूर्व भारत की कलीसिया पर नाना प्रकार के कश्ठ आ पडे/
जिसका सामना सभी विश्वासियों ने मिल झुल कर किया यह क्या पवित्रात्मा का प्रभान नहीं तो ऒर क्या?
सभी लोगों ने आम विश्वासियों का विश्वास देखा ऒर उसे सराहने लगे/
सभी विश्वासियों ने दॆर्य से अपने विश्वास की गवाही दी/
बिना डरे, साहस ऒर विश्वास के साथ जब विश्वासी गवाह देते तो उसका असार सारे लोगॊं पर अवश्य होना मामूलि बात हॆ/
आज भी भारत वर्ष में लोग विश्वासियों पर अत्याचार करना स्वाभाविक बात समझ कर उनपर हंसी मजाक करना नहीं चूकते/
संपर्क माध्यमों में इस बात का विवरण रॊज मिलता हे/
अनेक गरीब विश्वासियों ने अपना सब कुछ गवाया फिर भी उफ तक न किया/
विश्वास के दान को उन्हॊं ने अनमोल रत्न समझ कर संभाल कर रखा/
अनेक लोगों ने अपने विश्वास की रक्षा के लिए अपनी जान तक गवाई/
यह इतना साहस पवित्रात्मा के बल का अचरज नहीं तो ऒर क्या?
अल्प संख्यक विश्वासी अपना लॊहा बहुसंख्यक लोगों के सामने सिध्द करने में सफल होगये हॆं/
अनेक गरीब विश्वासियों ने इस कठिण समय में लोगों की सहायता अपने चंदे से ऒर प्रार्थना से की/
पुनर्जीवित ईसा मसीह का बलिदान का असर लोगों संघटित कर को एकता के बंधन से द्र्ढ्ता पूर्वक बांध दिया/
इस तरह के जीवन शॆली की बार प्रेरितों के चरित में सविस्थार उल्लेखित हॆ/
ईसा वास्तव में पुरोहित, राजा ऒर नबी हॆ/ उसी ने सभी विश्वासियों को पुरोहित, राजा ऒर नबी का वरदान दिया हॆ/
जब सामान्या विश्वासी पवित्र पूजा बलिदान का सहभागी बनता तब उसका जीवन ईसा के पुरोहिताई में संगटित होजाता हॆ/
जब सामान्य विश्वासी अपने जीवन से अपने विश्वास की साक्षी देते तब वह ईसा के राजा के कार्य का सह्भागी बन कर विश्वास का प्रचार प्रसार करता हॆ/
हम सब अपने जीवन की घटनावों के प्रभाव से जब विश्वास को सारे संसार के कोने कोने तक फॆलाने का प्रयास करते तब हम उस कार्य को बढाव देते जिससे विश्वास का वित्थार हो कर लोग मिशन कार्य को अपना कर्थव्य समझ कर जिम्मे दारी के साथ निभाने का बीडा उठाते/
जव सब विश्वासी अपना विश्वास क्रियाशील रूप में जीते तब ईश्वर का राज्य स्वाभाविक रूप से बढ्ने लगता हॆ/
विश्वासियों का जीवन ही विश्वास के अनुभूती का बीज बन कर दूर दूर तक फॆल जाता हॆ/
सब विश्वासी उनके जीवन में, प्यार, आनंद, शांति, स्थिराता,करुणा,दयाभाव, विनंब्रता, विनय,विश्वास,प्रेरणा आदि दानों से संपन्न होते तो वास्तव में पवित्रात्मा का वास दिखाई देता हॆ/
पेत्रुस एक डर्पोक, व्यक्ति था, जब उसके गुरू ईसा पर लोगों ने आक्रमण किया तो वह भाग निकला/
पर जब पवित्रात्मा ने उसे अपने बल से द्रढ किया तो वह एक दूसरा ही मनुष्य जॆसे लगा/
साहस ऒर कुशल वक्ता के समान ईसा के आदर्शों का प्रचार कर लोगों को पाप से परहेज कर विश्वास को अपनाने को प्रेरित करने लगा/
उस के दॆर्य को देख कर लोग हंसी उडाकर कहने लगे यह तो दारू पी कर ऎसी बातें कर रहा हॆ/
तब पेत्रुस साहस के साथ कहने लगा अब तो केवल दो ही बजे हॆं क्या आप यह समझ ते कि मनुष्य अब कोई दारू पिता हॆ?
ईश्वर का आत्मा जब मनुष्य में प्रवेश कर जाता तब जीवन तो अलग ही रूप लेलेता हॆ/
हम सब ईश्वर के मंदिर हॆं/
आज की मिस्सा के तीनों पाठ पवित्रात्मा के बल के बारें में हमें शिक्षा देते हॆं/
हमारे जीवन में हमें पवित्रात्मा का बल मिला हॆ/
जब विश्वासियों को पवित्रात्मा का बल प्राप्त होता हॆ तो उसके जीवन में एक तरह का जोश उत्पन्न हो जाता जिस से वह अपना विश्वास को गोवरव के साथ जी सकता हॆ/
कुरिंथियों के पत्र में पॊलुस कहते हॆं कि शरीर के विविध अंग एक होकर चलते उसी प्रकार से पवित्रात्मा की प्रेरणा के हर गुण लोगों को सच्चे जीवन में जीने की कला सिखाते/
हमारे शरीक के विविध अंग चलने का रहस्य हम इस प्रकार से समझ सकते/
विश्वासियों के जीवन में पवित्रात्मा लोगों को एक साथ जीने की कला प्रदर्शित करता हे/
जब शरीक के हर अंग उचित तरह से बढ्ते तो शरीर का विकास भी अच्छा लगता/
जब विश्वासि ईश्वर की इच्छा के अनुसार जी ये गा तो ईश्वर का राज संसार में आयेगा/
समाज के विविध प्रकार के लोग जब संगठित होकर अपना कार्य करते तब समाज भी अच्छा दिख ने लगता हॆ/
संत योहन के सुसमाचार में विश्वासियों को अपने मिशन दाइत्व को किस प्रकार से निभाना चाहिए इसका विवरण हॆ/
जब ईसा ने अपने शीश्यों को पाप क्षमा का दान दिया तो इस दान से हर पुरोहित ईश्वर के राज्य की स्थापना में अपना सहयोग दे सकता/
पाप क्षमा के संस्कार से ईसा मसीह ने लोगों को एक ऎसा वरदान दिया जिससे उनका जीवन सुखी हो सकता/
हमारे पाप केवल ईश्वर के असीम दया के प्रभाव से ही क्षमा हो सकते/
ईसा का आत्मा विश्वासियों को ईश्वर के न्याय को समझ ने का गुण प्रदान करता हॆ/
यह आत्मा हम सब को उसका संरक्षण प्रदान करे/
ईसी आशय के साथ आप सब पर पवित्रात्मा का प्रेशण हो
ईसी प्रार्थना के साथ आपका विश्वासी
